pH describes acidity and basicity
A pH of 9.5 is alkaline, but pH alone does not tell you everything about water quality, minerals or taste.

Alkaline water labels often feature a number such as 8.5, 9.0 or 9.5+. But what does that number actually measure?
The answer begins with the pH scale.
What is pH?
pH is a measurement related to the concentration and activity of hydrogen ions in a water-based solution. The scale is commonly shown from 0 to 14:
- Below 7 is acidic
- 7 is neutral under standard reference conditions
- Above 7 is alkaline, also called basic
The scale is logarithmic. A one-unit change represents a tenfold change in hydrogen-ion activity, so pH 9 is not simply “one point more alkaline” than pH 8.
What does pH 9.5+ mean?
It means the water measured at approximately pH 9.5 or higher under the conditions and method used for testing. Temperature, calibration and sample exposure can influence a pH reading, so quality-control procedures matter.

pH is not the same as alkalinity
Although the words sound similar, pH and alkalinity are not identical.
pH describes how acidic or basic the water is at the time of measurement. Alkalinity describes the water’s capacity to resist a drop in pH when acid is added. This buffering capacity is influenced by dissolved compounds such as bicarbonates and carbonates.
Two waters can have the same pH yet respond differently when exposed to acid because their buffering capacity differs.
How water becomes alkaline
Water can become alkaline naturally as it moves through mineral-rich rock and soil. Commercial alkaline water may also be produced through controlled mineral addition or electrochemical treatment.
The method matters because it influences mineral content, buffering and taste. A well-designed beverage aims for a consistent balance rather than chasing the highest possible pH number.
Does alkaline water change the body’s pH?
The human body regulates blood pH within a narrow range using the lungs, kidneys and chemical buffering systems. Drinking alkaline water does not override those controls in healthy people.
Food and beverages can temporarily affect the pH of the mouth, stomach contents or urine, but those changes should not be confused with broadly “alkalizing the body.” Claims that alkaline water can universally change blood pH are not supported by normal human physiology.
What matters most
Quality, consistency and taste
A pH number is useful, but it should be considered together with filtration, mineral composition, packaging and the overall drinking experience.
How pH can influence taste
Minerals and pH can affect perceived smoothness, bitterness and mouthfeel. The relationship is not simple: a high pH does not automatically guarantee better taste. Excessive mineralization can make water taste chalky, metallic or salty.

Can pH change after opening?
